Scholarly articles are written by experts in a field or discipline (professors or researches), typically for other experts or scholars.  The writing is formal and uses specialized terminology.  Most scholarly articles undergo peer-review (a critical review by other experts) before publication and contain cited references to the information sources used in the article. (Note that refereed is another term for peer-review.)
